The Hinau track is a walk that fully immerses you in the surrounding bush and forest.

Take one last look at the town of Kaikoura from the Mt Fyffe car park before you get lost in the hinau trees for which the track is named. You can identify the hinau trees by their long thin leaves, small white flowers and purple fruit.

Among the hinau trees, you will also find mahoe, putaputaweta, broadleaf, tree fuchsia and pigeonwood. You will also pass through a strand of kanuka which contrasts greatly from the rest of the vegetation on the walk. 

Duration: 45 minute loop walk suitable for families

Distance: 1 kilometre

Difficulty Level: Easy

A super easy and family friendly walk. Well maintained track although a little slippery in some parts when wet. two very small stream crossings and lots of fantails. Super easy for school age children.

Took 2 dogs and 2 kids. Was a good solid walk heading up, but not so bad that we had to take breaks, although waterfall and few view spots were great to pause at. Recommend going left at the loop. We had fun running down hill full speed at the descent part of the loop!

My wife and I did this lovely, shady forest walk in about 20 minutes. It meanders up and down around a couple of gullies, barely got our heart rates up. Would be ok for smaller children with some hand holding on steeper sections, there are a couple of small creek crossings, easily done by stepping on rocks in the creek bed. It starts just above the locked gate across the Mt Fyffe Rd and exits slightly higher up from where you start.

We completed this track in 30 minutes with two kids, aged 7 and 13. It was a hot early December afternoon, but once we entered the forest, it became cooler. Some parts were steep, but overall, we found it manageable. There's also a stargazing area near the car park, and we plan to check it out later today
